Meet Our Youth Ed Director

Unity of Buffalo Youth Education

We are a multigenerational ministry that welcomes children of all ages.

Unity of Buffalo Youth Education program runs each Sunday concurrent to the Sunday service at 10 a.m.  Each week the children are given the opportunity to explore the teachings of Unity through stories, games, art and more.  The children are encouraged to share their ideas and beliefs openly and to find the truth within themselves.

Our Youth Education program is designed to serve youth ages 4-14.  Children may participate in our youth program or stay upstairs with their parents during the adult service.  There is a basket of “quiet toys” in the front foyer if you choose to keep your children with you during the service.  Over the past year our youth program has consisted of 26 different children from 19 different families.  They ranged in age from 4 to 13.  There was an average of four children per Sunday.

Dawn Lewandowski

Our Youth Ed Director - Dawn Lewandowski:

Dawn Lewandowski has been a member of Unity Church, studying Unity principles for over 15 years and has served as our Youth Education Director since 2007.  Dawn has had a lifelong interest in diversity, enjoying learning about different cultures and spiritual belief systems.  She has a particular affinity for the Haitian culture having spent a year and a half immersed in their culture through Beyond Border’s Apprenticeship in Shared Living Program.

Dawn has a B.A. in Elementary and Special Education.  She has found particular inspiration in her ongoing study of alternative education and parenting styles, something that she brings to her work with our children at Unity and in the home schooling of her two children, Verdilia and Mekano.

Dawn has also made a personal study Compassionate Communication, a practice that she has shared in workshops at our church as well.  She also studies Aikido, the way of spiritual harmony, and takes delight in singing, dancing and laughing as often as possible.  Dawn nurtures each child trusting that they are unfolding perfectly as they find their own unique spiritual path.

Unity’s Approach to Childrenbased upon the words of our co-founder

Our mission is not to entertain the children but to call them out.  To be always entertained is to be dwarfed and dependent.  To be ‘called out’ is to follow the harmonious law of the soul’s unfoldment.

“Who meddles with the rosebud?  What fingers are deft enough to pry open that marvel of folded beauty?  We are wise enough to leave it alone to follow the glad law of its own unfolding.

“But our children!  Have we dealt as wisely with these buds of marvelous possibility?  Have we always remembered that they, too, must quicken and unfold through the innate law of their own genius?”
